How much space do I get?

Each user has fifty megabytes (50MB) of space on the server. This space can be divided up into different directories. If you require more space this may be requested through the support system.

POP email accounts are allocated one hundred megabytes (100MB) of space.

What will my URL be?

The URL of your space will include your Company, Battalion or District name.

They will be in the form: http://name.boys-brigade.org.uk where name will be your Company, Battalion or District name.

When a URL of the above form is called (ie without the name of a file at the end) the web server will automatically display a file called either index.htm or index.html.

For other pages, people will need to give the name of the page; for example, to see the page welcome.htm you would need to ask the web browser to fetch: http://name.boys-brigade.org.uk/welcome.htm

Are subdirectories allowed?

Yes, subdirectories are enabled, so you can break down your pages according to sections.

Can I use the web space for commercial purposes?

You are not allowed to use the web space for any commercial purposes.

How can I make a particular file private?

You cannot make a file private. All files within your web space are available to anyone who knows the filename of it. If you wish files to be kept private then the only way to achieve this is by not creating any links to that file.

Do I have any FTP space?

The Boys' Brigade does not offer FTP space.

You may also include items within your web space for people to download using their browser. The file extensions recognised by browsers as files to be downloaded include .zip, .exe.

Many browsers will automatically detect what files should be downloaded rather than displayed and start the download process for the user.

What happens when I fill up my space?

You will not be able to add any more information to your web site. It is not possible to put more than 50MB of information on the server. If you require more space than the standard 50MB you may request another 50MB to be added to the existing space. Please contact the Web Support Team by submitting a request through our support system.

Am I allowed more than one email address?

We can only provide one email address per Company/Battalion/District. Please note that we are also not able to provide email addresses to individuals.

My pages don't work. Who can I phone?

There is no telephone support with the web space supplied by the BB. If you have a problem connecting to the server please submit a support ticket with as much detail as possible.

If you are having trouble with links within your site check the following first:

  • Are your filenames all lower case? Do your links have all lowercase letters? This means that the filename: Index.htm is NOT the same as index.htm.

This is the most common error for links not working.

  • Do the links point to the correct directory?

If the file your are linking to is not in the same directory as the file the link is in then does the link point to the correct location?
